The action takes place in one of the small towns in Nebraska. The real events on which the film is based are as follows: Brandon Twaney was a young man who was born a woman, but who felt like a man from an early age. As a teenager, Brandon introduced himself to local girls in Lincoln as a boy. He then moved to Falls City, where he gained a reputation as a bean lover. Brandon dated several local girls, all of whom later described him as the "perfect gentleman" and "best friend" they'd ever had. He had a particularly close relationship with Lana Tisdel, because of which he had a conflict with her former lover, John Lotter. When rumors of his gender ambiguity surfaced, John and his friend, Marvin Thomas Nissen, introduced Brandon to Lani as a woman and then raped him. Three days later, Brandon and two other men were found shot to death on an abandoned farm. Lotter and Nissen were arrested and convicted of triple murder.
