Recently widowed Alma Mahler, a well-known socialite, seduces the young artist Oskar Kokoschka. A small sexual adventure turns into a whirlwind romance. Oskar considers Alma his muse, who serves his male fantasies more than reality. Alma herself is also an artist - a composer. Oscar's obsession with making this woman his own jeopardizes her dream of making it on her own. A game of power and dependence ensues, leading Alma and Oscar to the brink of self-destruction.
