XIX century. A young girl, Marian Brooke, the orphaned daughter of a southern general, moves to New York to live with her traditionalist aunts. There she finds herself entangled in the lives of rich neighbors and a ruthless railroad tycoon, whose wife is trying to make her way into the upper world. Marian must understand the rules of this society and pave her way to the future.
