At the end of the American Civil War, Lieutenant John Dunbar finds himself at a remote checkpoint in the borderlands, where he befriends a wolf and meets the Sioux Indians. Fascinated by their simple life in nature, John decides to break with his past and join them, taking the name One Who Dances with Wolves. He becomes a full member of the tribe and falls in love with a white girl who grew up among the Sioux. But their peaceful life is disturbed by the appearance of American soldiers who have received an order to clear the territory of Indians. It's time for John to make the most important choice of his life...
