Maria is the child of two of the most powerful European families. She could have become Queen of Great Britain, but despite the fact that the future King George V proposes marriage to her, under pressure from her mother, Maria marries the Romanian Crown Prince Ferdinand. The queen's life is spent in storms, scandals and conflicts. In 1916, Romania entered the First World War on the side of the Entente, expecting to annex territories inhabited by ethnic Romanians in the event of victory. At first, Romania led a successful campaign and even occupied Transylvania, but soon found itself surrounded by enemy troops. The Romanian army suffered several crushing defeats, and soon the Austro-German troops invaded the territory of the country. Romania was forced to conclude a humiliating peace treaty. Despite the fact that King Ferdinand did not ratify it, it was because of this treaty that the Paris Peace Conference refused to recognize Romania's demands. Hopes that the international community will recognize a united Romania are fading day by day.
