During the American Civil War, Northern soldiers attack the family of farmer Josie Wales. His wife and child are killed, and he, obsessed with revenge, sides with the South. The war is over, but Josi does not lay down his arms. Now he is an outlaw, and he is hunted by the authorities, hired killers and ordinary thugs.
