Macabea, a 19-year-old girl from the northeastern Brazilian hinterland, a round orphan, goes to São Paulo and gets a job as a typist in a small company. She lives in a poor boarding house in one room with three female neighbors, and her life is not full of emotions, because she does not care about them. Macabea meets the boy Olímpico de Jesus, they fall in love. But the relationship soon ends and Olímpico finds a replacement for Makabeya, whom he calls "a hair in the soup." Olímpico's new lover is Gloria, Maccabea's colleague, who, on the advice of a fortune teller at cards, won Maccabea a boyfriend, and she is advised to turn to the same fortune teller, who will help her solve all her problems.
