The final premiere of the season of the Metropolitan Opera brings a comedy - and a very rowdy one. It all begins not anywhere, but in the bedroom of the princess, the marshal's wife, to whom 17-year-old Octavian confesses his love. The confession is interrupted by the invasion of the Marshal's cousin, the lustful Baron Ox - he is marrying the rich heiress Sophie and is looking for a gentleman who, according to custom, should present the bride with a rose. What follows is a carnival series of misunderstandings and falling in love. Robert Carsen, a fan of bright stage colors, moves the action from the 18th century to the era of the decline of the Habsburg Empire, closer to the time when the opera was written by Richard Strauss.
