February 2012: The Vatican officially censors American nuns, placing them under the control of conservative bishops. The Vatican's position is clear: feminism is simply incompatible with Catholicism, and if you want to remain part of the Church, you must renounce your "radical" ideology. The women refuse to conform as they follow sisters Simone Campbell, Chris Schenk and Jean Hughes as they challenge the patriarchal system by enlisting ordinary people to fight for equality and eventually win the heart of Pope Francis. With their cross-country journey, codenamed "Nuns on the Bus," in which they minister to the marginalized and continue the fight for women's religious equality, these sisters are transforming American politics—and the Church itself.
