The author wrote his novel, inspired by his own experience of working in a psychiatric institution, communicating with patients, and using psychotropic substances. Published in 1962, the book quickly gained popularity among readers and became one of the main works of the era of beatniks and hippies. According to the plot of the film, the criminal Randle Patrick McMurphy feigns insanity to avoid imprisonment. Thus, he ends up in a psychiatric hospital, where he is faced with strict rules set by a cruel senior nurse. Not wanting to put up with them, Randle dares to rebel. The role of McMurphy is one of the most iconic in the career of Jack Nicholson, who won his first Oscar for it. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was filmed in a real psychiatric hospital, with real patients and staff as extras. In order to get used to the role, the actors rehearsed in the hospital, talked and spent time with patients and doctors. Towards the end of filming, they almost settled in the department. The performance was so convincing that the producers began to worry about the mental state of the performers. The picture was released in 1975, quickly taking its place among the masterpieces of world cinema classics. This film is one of only three in the history of the Academy Awards to win the "Big Five" major awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" will be released in Ukrainian theaters on June 10, 2021.
