Paris, 1899. An orphan who grew up in poverty, and now the commander of the gendarmerie department, Jean Albertini must infiltrate a group of anarchists. For him, this is a real opportunity for career advancement. But the further he goes, the more he has doubts. As Jean compiles police reports on a criminal group for his boss Gaspard, he himself begins to sympathize with them more and more.
