The story of the Kowalski family and other families killed by German SS units for helping Jews is an attempt to recreate the life of a typical Polish town and Polish-Jewish relations from the time of occupation. The stories of eyewitnesses of those events are intertwined with staged fragments. Poland and Ukraine were the only countries in Europe where the Germans executed whole families for helping Jews. On December 6, 1942, in Tsepeliu near Rzeszów, the Nazis burned 34 Poles alive for hiding Jews...
