Thomas and the other gladers have already escaped from the terrible maze, survived in the post-apocalyptic world and hid from the company of VICES. They exist in a world where there is no cure for a virus that has infected most of the Earth's population. Some of the people on Thomas's team (notably Min-ho and Teresa) are now in the hands of the VICE for various reasons. And these tyrants can do whatever they want with them.
