In January 2013, Laura Poitras began receiving anonymous encrypted e-mails from a man named "CITIZENFOUR," who claimed to have evidence of illegal surveillance programs run by the NSA in cooperation with other intelligence agencies around the world. Five months later, she and journalists Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill flew to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with the man. It turned out to be Edward Snowden.
