In the center of the plot, Cheryl Strayed, crushed by an unsuccessful marriage and the death of her mother, who has lost all hope for happiness, goes on a hiking trip along the Pacific Crest Trail - a route along the highest parts of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Mountains.
