The events of the story take place on an Australian island remote from the mainland after the end of the First World War. A lighthouse keeper and his wife face a moral dilemma when they discover a newborn baby and a dead husband in a boat anchored to the shore. The couple decides to raise the child as their own, because they wanted their own for a long time, but it didn't work out. They had no idea how devastating the consequences of their choice would be.
