Sherlock Holmes is long retired. He is 93 years old and lives in Sussex on a remote estate with his housekeeper, Mrs. Munro, and her young son, Roger. Holmes suffers from the fact that his memory is no longer the same, and makes unpleasant jokes with him. He even traveled to Hiroshima to get the medicine he needed. The detective is unhappy with how his latest case was described by Watson and tries to remember the details to write his own version. But Holmes remembers only fragments: a quarrel with an evil man and a secret connection of the case with his beautiful wife. Grandpa tells Roger about all kinds of natural things, and the boy helps him remember why the famous detective quit his job. But the creators of the film changed it to a simpler and more accessible one - "Mr. Holmes". The American, Oscar laureate Bill Condon became the director. Among his works are the drama "Gods and Monsters" with Ian McKellen, two parts of the popular saga "Twilight" and the thriller "The Fifth Estate" with Benedict Cumberbatch about the most famous website WikiLeaks. Condon was also one of the screenwriters of the six-Oscar winner of the musical "Chicago". Ian McKellen, who played Holmes, said in an interview that he did not research his character before filming. The actor admitted that while working on The Lord of the Rings, he was most distracted by thoughts about what changes were made to the screenplay for the sake of the screenplay. He learned a lesson and prepared for the role on his own. McKellen took a beekeeping course at the London Honey Company for the film Mr. Holmes. The composer of the tape was the laureate of the Venice Film Festival, Carter Burwell. His filmography includes the drama of the Coen brothers "Barton Fink", "Being John Malkovich" by Spike Jones, "Lie down in Bruges" with Colin Farrell, the children's film "Where the monsters live", "Seven Psychopaths" by Martin McDonagh and many others. Filming of "Mr. Holmes" began in July 2014 in Great Britain and lasted for seven weeks. Other venues were London and the south coast of England.
