For Jeff Nichols, "Midnight Special" is the first studio film. Initially, he was going to work with an independent film studio, rather than Warner Bros. Pictures, in order to have more freedom of action. Nichols announced this at the last meeting with the producers, who went to meet him for financial reasons. According to the plot of the film, the heroes are fleeing from New Mexico. They cross Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama on their way to Florida. Some scenes were filmed in these states, but most - in New Orleans and small towns. "Midnight Special Edition" was presented in competition at the Berlinale in 2016.
