The events take place in 2005 in the USA, shortly before the mortgage housing crisis. The focus is on separate but parallel stories. Financial genius Michael Barry, a former doctor and now the head of an investment fund, understands that the American mortgage market is like a soap bubble that is ready to burst in the next couple of years. Therefore, he insures about a billion dollars of his clients against debt default. Being independent in the company allows Barry to speak out against the banks, which are only too happy to accept his proposal, considering the manager to be crazy. They do not believe in his premonitions. But several financiers, after analyzing the strategy of Michael Barry, decide that they can make good money from the approaching crisis. Read more The plot of the film "The Relegation Game" is based on two bestsellers by Michael Lewis: "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" and "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game". The writer himself worked in a large bank on Wall Street in the 80s. Then he wrote the first book "Liar's Poker", and after the crisis in the 2000s, he decided to start a sequel. For this, Michael Lewis met with former investors, educated and intelligent people who lost everything at that time. For the director of the film, Adam McKay, this will be the first dramatic project in his filmography. He worked on such comedies as "Television Host: The Legend of Ron Burgundy", "Step Brothers" with Will Ferrell, "Cops in the Deep Stock" and others. "Relegation Game" is the first film for actor Ryan Gosling after a two-year hiatus. In addition to him, three Oscar winners (Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Marisa Tomei), Steve Carell and Brad Pitt are involved in the film. It is interesting that Christian Bale, who played the financial genius Michael Barry, has already starred in a similar role in Mary Herron's drama "American Psycho". For the filming of certain scenes, the office of the investment firm Lehman Brothers and the lobby of the New York Department of Financial Services in Manhattan were recreated.
