The events take place in Copenhagen, at the beginning of the 20s of the 20th century. The famous illustrator and artist Gerda Wegener sometimes asks her husband, Einar, to pose for her as a female model. Due to the popularity of these paintings, the artist decided to continue painting Wegener, turning him into a woman. Einar, in turn, admires his new image. He likes the way he looks, and gradually the model turns into herself - Lily Elbe. Einar Wegener becomes the first person in history to decide on a sex change operation. And although at first Gerda could not accept her husband's changes, she found the strength to support Lili Elbe's new life. The Australian decided to start filming herself when there were problems with finding a director. Charlize Theron was supposed to play Gerda Wegener, but in 2008 she left the project. Then there were Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz. Nothing worked until Tom Hooper became interested. He chose Eddie Redmayne for the role of Einar and showed him the script during the filming of Les Misérables. The actor agreed, and a little later Alicia Vikander joined to play the artist. The director of the film "The Girl from Denmark" had previously worked on very successful projects. It is worth mentioning "The King Speaks!" with Colin Firth and Les Miserables, a picture based on the work of Victor Hugo. The music for the film was composed by Oscar winner Oleksandr Depla. He worked on such tapes as "The Painted Veil", "The Tree of Life", "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", "Operation Argo", "The Imitation Game" and others. Filming of the picture began in February 2015 and lasted until April. They were held in London, Copenhagen, Belgium, Norway and Germany.
