The film is based on the first book of the trilogy, the events of which develop during the era of Joseph Stalin's rule. The main character of the film is Lev Demidov, an intelligence officer who is in the crosshairs of the government. He must conduct a series of investigations to find a maniac, each news of which means that he has killed another child. At the same time, the authorities deny the existence of such deaths and demote a conscientious officer. After all, such crimes simply cannot take place in an ideal society. Demidov has no choice but to conduct his own investigation and find more and more strange evidence. At the same time, Christian Bale tried out for the role of Lev Demydov (Hardy) during the casting process. Vincent Cassel replaced the deceased Philip Seymour Hoffman. Locations in Prague served as the place of work. When the script was written, no one could know for sure whether the film would be made. The fact was that the film was included in the "black list" of scenarios that could not justify the money spent on filming.
