While creating "Bury the Ex", he did not deviate from his direction of comedy horror. For financing, the director chose an interesting, but at that time not so extravagant way of collecting money. Part of the budget for filming the tape was collected with the help of crowdfunding. So the project was presented on the website Fundanything.com, where everyone who wanted to see the new creation of the cult director could donate any amount. Incentives, depending on the invested money, were different. For example, it was possible to have lunch with the creators of the film, or to visit the film set in the midst of the work process. Filming began in mid-November 2013 and lasted for about twenty days. The film's budget left much to be desired, so the work was carried out within tight deadlines and with some savings. The story itself is based on the 2008 short film of the same name written by Alan Trezz. He was also the author of the idea to expand his script to a full-length version. For Anton Yelchin, the performer of the main male role in "Bury the Ex", the experience of participating in similar projects is not new. Previously, he starred in the remake of the cult film "Fright Night" with Colin Farrell.
