The roles that went to John Cusack and Julianne Moore were initially offered to Viggo Mortensen and Rachel Weisz. The cast was completely selected by May 9, 2013. The filming took a total of about thirty days. The director and his team worked in Los Angeles for five days, and they spent the remaining twenty in Toronto.
