The creators made it with some reference to the poster of the film "Here they are burning" (2005). The name "Unexpected Business" was determined officially not immediately. One of the first versions was titled "Business Trip". Tom Wilkinson, who performed one of the leading roles, previously worked with James Franco, while here his partner, in addition to Vince Vaughn, became Dave Franco. The character Dave's last name in the original has a certain meaning. The character of Franko in the film is a bit stupid, maybe that's why the creators called him Mike Mlynchyk. Ken Scott, the director of "Unexpected Business", managed to work with Vince Vaughn before that. Together, they worked on the remake of Scott's film The Good Father (2013), based on the film Papa (2011). The screenwriter was Steve Conrad, who worked on the texts for the films "The Weatherman" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", for example. Filming of the comedy began in mid-November 2013. The first site for work was Boston, Massachusetts. There, a year later, the team reshot some scenes. In addition, the team visited Berlin, Germany. There, the creators rented the Babelsberg studio to record several scenes.
