Heading to Ukraine, which in the 1930s was going through not the best times, Michael Shamrock was full of hopes and plans. An engineer by profession, he thought that he would be useful in creating a socialist state of the future, in which he would be assisted by his son Peter. However, the American dies after receiving secret papers about repression in the country, which were revealed in Peter's book. A ten-year-old boy has to escape from the police, which later leads him to the blind kobzar Ivan Kocherga. The musician accepts his new friend as a guide and tries to protect him from all the terrible things that happen around them. The boy Anton Svyatoslav Green, who played the role of the boy Peter in "The Guide", himself is from the USA, and his great-grandfather was a prisoner of a Soviet labor camp. For the singer Jamala, the role in the film was the first in her cultural career. The first scene of the film was shot in 2012, namely in February. Initially, it was planned that the premiere of the drama would be in August 2013, which did not happen as a result. It was based on a real case that happened in Ukraine in 1934. Then about two hundred kobzars were taken to the forest and shot under false pretenses.
