The building was called Görlitzer Warenhaus, it was built on the border of Germany and Poland in 1912. The director decided to pay tribute to tradition and shoot the film entirely on the territory of Germany. In addition, a sizeable mock-up was made specifically for some angles and compositions. The director also paid close attention to Tilda Swinton's make-up. The actress playing the lady, who is 84 years old, had to spend more than one hour in the make-up chair. And it was a very expensive make-up, which Anderson insisted on, although he tries to make films with small budgets. For the role of Gustav, who was eventually played by Ralph Fiennes, Johnny Depp was predicted for a long time, but at the last moment his candidacy was dropped. On the other hand, the cast, and the film crew in general, includes old friends and colleagues of Wes, including composer Alexander Desplat, actors Edward Norton, Bill Murray, William Dafoe and others.
