Read more Despite the fact that there is a "Winter's Tale" (which is the original name of the film) written by V. Shakespeare, this film is based on a completely different story. The author of the original source for the film was the novel by Mark Helprin, which was released in 1983. In England, "Winter Fantasy" was released under a different name, which sounds like "New York Winter's Tale". For the Oscar-winning director Akiva Goldsman, the film was his directorial debut. Before that, he repeatedly acted as a screenwriter, for which he received an Oscar, and as a producer. Golsman had the idea to transfer "Winter Fantasy" to the screen back in 2010, and after the death of his beloved wife, he firmly decided to take up this project. Russell Crowe was invited by the director to play the antagonist after he starred in two films based on his scripts. Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, Aaron Taylor, Garrett Headlung and others tried out for the role played by Colin Ferrell. At first, none other than Martin Scorsese wanted to direct the film, but considering the book "inconvenient" for a film adaptation, he refused the project. The film was originally composed by Hanz Zimmer, who wrote some of the music before going on to work on the soundtrack for 12 Years a Slave. His friend Rupert Gregson-Williams finished the album of scores for "Winter Fantasy".
