Neil wrote the script for the futuristic drama together with his wife Terri Tatchell, who had previously helped him in writing stories. The team started shooting the tape at the end of October 2013, taking Johannesburg (South Africa). They ended in February next year. However, some scenes were reshot in April, for which the film crew went to British Columbia (Canada). For Sharlto Copley, "Robot Chappie" became the third joint work with Neill Blomkamp. And all because they are old friends, since high school. The situation is similar with the friends of director José Pablo Cantilla and Brandon Ore, who could previously be seen in "The Ninth District" and "Elysium". Copley "played" Chappie himself. The motion capture technology used to create Gorlum in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was used. One of the notable moments of the film is the participation of Die Antwoord.
