The location of the main filming was the city of Herlitz, located in Eastern Germany. The actress for the role of the main character, Liesel, was searched for in many countries, until they finally settled on the French-Canadian actress Sophie Neliss. Her participation was announced in February 2013. Filming, which began in March 2013, did not last very long, with an expected release in the last days of winter 2014. Initially, it was January 2014, but due to a good schedule, the premiere was postponed to November 2013. In particular, one of the reasons for this decision was the creators' desire to participate in the race for prestigious awards, including the Oscar. Even during the shooting period, the author of the book spoke quite warmly about the progress of work on his novel. The book was published in 2006 and took 7 years to reach cinema screens. Starting out as an author of children's books, Zusak wrote the novel "The Book Thief" already for adult children, but also with a view to a more mature audience. Actress Emily Watson (Rosa) had previously starred in a military drama with a similar period, in the film "War Horse".
