The main roles were performed by Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston, whose popularity at the time of filming in certain circles was off the charts. For a long time, the film was not among the possible nominees and entered the list literally in the last days. The main places for work were the cities of Germany and the USA. For the main role played by the Englishman Tom Hiddleston, Jarmusch was initially going to take Michael Fassbender, who was not against participating in the project at first, but then refused. Several scenes were shot at a Delray bar called the Ideal, which closed in 1986. The owner, an old man, after some time set fire to the neighbor's house, which he bought in connection with the bar, in order to have full access to the basement of the establishment. The arson was aimed at obtaining insurance, but in the end it did not lead to anything, as the man was exposed. Jarmusch announced his intention to shoot "Only Lovers Will Survive" back in 2011, after which he spent more than six months looking for financing. As a result, the film was shot by the end of September 2012.
