A film based on real events from the director of two Jason Bourne films. This is a film about human resilience and noble pride, courage. The events will tell about the case in 2009 when Somali pirates boarded the dry cargo ship MV Maersk Alabama, which belongs to the USA. In order to protect the entire crew and prevent the pirates, Richard Phillips, the ship's captain, voluntarily offered his candidacy. In addition, he immediately noticed the danger and tried to prevent capture by quickly coordinating the entire work group of crew members. Acting as a hostage, the sailor was held captive for three days. During this time, many events happened to him, about which few people know. Read more The main sea scenes were filmed on the territory of Malta, which is not the first experience of "cooling off" at sea for Tom Hanks, who played the main role - here we can recall his dramatic character in the film "Outlaw" (2000). Also, several episodes were filmed near the shores of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The work boiled over in the summer of 2012 to reflect the authenticity of the weather and seasonality. The idea to shoot this film came to the creators when the book "Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Seals and Dangers at Sea" was published by Richard Phillips himself, from which the character of Tom Hanks was written. In addition to the personality itself, creators and producers were also attracted by the fact that this case of capturing an American ship was the first in the past 200 years. "Captain Phillips" is not the first among the works of director Paul Greengrass, who in the break between Bourne made the film "The Lost Flight" (2006). The film told about the events that took place on board one of the planes on the unfortunate 9/11 date for America. The skill of the director made it possible to make assumptions about the film's candidacy for the Oscar even before the official release.
