Severine (Deneuve), the virtuous wife of the virtuous bourgeois Pierre (Sorel), visits a brothel during the day, where she expertly practices what is called "the first and oldest profession." The irony and sarcasm in relation to the Pharisaic morality of clericalism are especially wonderful in this erotic drama of the Spanish director. The picture, based on the novel by Joseph Kessel, gives the impression of a disturbing mana.
