The years take their toll and even the tireless adventurer and master of breaking women's hearts has aged, but Jones has not abandoned university teaching and archaeology. The events of the film take place at the height of the Cold War, in 1957. Soviet soldiers, led by agent Iryna Spalko, kidnap Marion Ravenwood - the old lover of Indiana Jones, giving the professor a choice: inaction and Marion's death or helping Soviet intelligence in search of the legendary Crystal Skull in exchange for the woman's freedom.
