Victor Navorsky arrives in New York from Eastern Europe at the very moment when war breaks out in his homeland. As the state status of his country has changed, Victor's passport becomes invalid and he has to be delayed in the transit section of Kennedy Airport. Waiting for a solution to this situation, Victor spends days and nights in the international terminal for long weeks. He constantly finds himself in funny and absurd situations, confronts the absurdity of bureaucratic procedures and the ambitions of officials, as well as manifestations of generosity and nobility.
