The story of a talented and successful writer, Mort Rainey, who is going through a difficult period in his life. After he exposes his cheating wife and goes through the tedious formalities of a divorce, Mort decides to retire, move out of town and deal with his creative crisis in the quiet of country life. But one night a stranger breaks into his house and accuses Mort of plagiarism. John Shooter (John Turturro) looks remarkably like a psychopath, but Mort still tries to convince him that he is right. And only after John's departure, he suddenly discovers the disappearance - the manuscript of his book disappears...
