The emperor is trying to eradicate the ancient samurai warriors in preparation for a more pro-Western government policy ... Read more Captain Nathan Algren is a morally unstable man. The battles in which he participated now seem distant and futile. Once he risked his life for the honor of his country - in Antietam (Maryland) and Gettysburg (Virginia) - but since the time when the Civil War was raging in America, the world has changed a lot. Somewhere, in the unknown lands, near the banks of the Washita River, Algren lost his soul. And at this time, on the other side of the earth, another soldier realizes that the lifestyle to which he is accustomed is crumbling. His name is Katsumoto. He is the last leader of an ancient and revered line of samurai warriors. Just as civilization invaded the territory of the American West, uprooting and oppressing the Native Americans, so too did traditional Japan. But Katsumoto won't go down without a fight. The paths of these two warriors cross when the young Emperor of Japan, living in American interests and eager for the growth of the Japanese market, hires Algren to mobilize and train the first modern Japanese army. Intruding into harsh and unfamiliar territory, Algren's life, and probably more importantly, his soul, is in a critical situation. An American soldier who has lost his faith finds himself in the middle of a powerful epic war between two eras and two different worlds. And he conducts it with, known only to him, the meaning of honor.
