The film tells the story of two women during the Second World War in Italy: Cesira, a widowed Roman shopkeeper, and her daughter Rosetta. In order to free her daughter from the constant fear of incessant bombings, Chezira decides to leave with her to the town of Vallecorsa in Chocharia, south of the capital, where she was born and raised. There, Cesaria and Rosetta meet Michele, an intelligent guy with communist views. One day, a small detachment of Germans, who are retreating under the onslaught of the Allies, comes to their town. They take Michele with them to show them the way through the mountains...
