Read more During the filming of the episode where Aragorn kicks off the Uruk-hai helmet at the orc corpse dump in Rohan, near Fanhorn, actor Viggo Mortensen broke his toe. And during the filming of the battle in Helm's Hollow, he lost a tooth. Orlando Bloom (Legolas) and John Rhys-Davies' understudy (Gimli) Brett Beatty fell from their horses, causing the former to break a rib and the latter to injure his knee. During the Battle of Helm's Hollow, Bernard Hill (Theoden) injured his ear. Treebeard in the film was created using computer graphics, but in the scenes where Merry and Pippin are sitting on his shoulders, a life-size (14 feet) model of the Ent on wheels was used. Toy soldiers were also used in the filming of the battle scene in Helm's Hollow. David Wenham (Faramir) was the only actor on the set of the trilogy who had not read the Lord of the Rings books. Most of the shots in the Battle of Hornburg were fired by John Mahaffey. 700 Uruk-hai actors spoke Maori and improvised as they speared each other before battle. The gate in Helm's Hollow had to be additionally strengthened. Viggo Mortensen bowed to the stuntmen for their work. Brad Dourif (Sweettongue Grin) shaved off his eyebrows and sprinkled potato flakes on his hair to create the appropriate look.
