Little Tramp meets a beautiful blind girl (Virginia Cherrill) selling flowers on the street, who mistakes him for a rich duke. After learning that the operation can restore her sight, little Tramp goes in search of money. In a series of hilarious adventures that only Chaplin could come up with, he eventually gets the money, but ends up in jail because of it. The girl underwent surgery while the Little Tramp was in prison, and she seeks to find her mysterious benefactor. The final scene, when the girl learns that he is not a rich duke, but only a Little Tramp, makes the audience cry. This film is perhaps the most representative of Chaplin's work as an actor, director and screenwriter, made at the height of his fame. He appears in many roles: a tramp clown, an athlete, a lover, a foolish fool, a ballet dancer, a great tragedian and a mime
